Focus on child safety – World Patient Safety Day 2025
World Patient Safety Day will take place on 17 September 2025 under the slogan “Patient safety from childhood onwards – an investment for life”. Studies show that children are exposed to a significantly higher risk of medication errors than adults. Even the smallest deviations in dosage can have serious consequences, and calculating dosage based on body weight is often complex. This makes it all the more important to have a distinct identification for each individual patient – from birth onwards.
Safety begins immediately after birth
Numerous babies are born on a neonatal ward every day, which makes distinguishing between of the little patients especially difficult. In this situation, it is very important that each baby is unambiguously identified. Only then can they receive the correct treatment – since even small mistakes can have serious consequences.
This is where the Armilla Patient’s Wristband comes into its own:
- Immediately after birth, each and every baby is given an individual wristband with an unambiguous Patient ID.
- The nurse scans the wristband before administering each dose of medication.
- The system immediately confirms that the identity and prescription match.
This reliably prevents mix-ups – taking the pressure off the staff and giving reassuring protection for parents.
Quality that builds trust
Armilla patient's wristbands are registered as Class I medicinal products and comply with strict medical quality requirements. They are particularly skin-friendly, and their flexible adhesive closure gently adapts them to the sensitive skin of newborns. Thanks to thermal transfer printing, their lettering and barcodes remain clearly legible even after repeated disinfection and prolonged wear.
Moreover, the printed barcodes (linear codes or matrix codes) ensure seamless integration into digital documentation. Instead of manually entering data into the hospital information system, it is transferred directly. This not only reduces the amount of work involved, but also prevents transmission errors.
A practical example from Regensburg
The way the system works is shown by the Krankenhaus Barmherzige Brüder in Regensburg. This hospital has used Armilla wristbands since 2021. At the ward reception desk, each family initially receives their own wristband confirming their relationship to the child. The code is checked again before anyone enters the nursery ward. Only authorised persons are granted entry. This double security system has proven itself, and ensures that only the right people can have access to the babies.
Patient safety from the very outset
Armilla patient's wristbands provide an important contribution to making hospitals safer for children and newborns. They combine medical quality with ease of use, thus creating trust on all sides. The result: fewer medication errors and greater safety right from the start.
Armilla wristbands thereby make an important contribution to implementing this year's WHO motto: “Patient safety from childhood onwards – an investment for life”.
