Implant Register

Greater patient safety thanks to the Implant Register

On 26 September 2019, the German Bundestag (Federal Parliament) adopted the  "Act Establishing an Implant Register". The intended participants are to include health establishments, patients and implant manufacturers. The aim is to create grater transparency and to improve both the safety and the quality of implants for individuals with statutory and private insurance in the future.

Regardless of whether it involves heart pacemakers, replacement hip joints or other implants – from 1 January 2020 onwards, the National Register will contain a note of when, to whom and which implants were implanted. This can enable a faster response, and allow patients to be informed as quickly as possible about possible recall campaigns, defective products or complications. The data necessary for the Implant Register will be read in via a scan of the barcode on the medical products – ideally during the surgical operation or close to the time of the latter.
